Three policemen examined in case against Irom Sharmila

New Delhi, June 5 : Three policemen were examined as prosecution witnesses in a court here on Friday in a case lodged against activist Irom Sharmila for attempting suicide during her fast-unto-death here in 2006. Three policeman - assistant sub inspector and then head constable Pal Singh, constable Kapil and investigating officer in the case Subhash Chander - testified as witnesses in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain. Sharmila, 40-year-old activist from Manipur, was also presented before the court in pursuance of a warrant issued against her. Chander, whose statement was recorded in May last year, was recalled for cross examition. The court will continue recording of evidence on Saturday. Sharmila has been on a fast for about 12 years, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The court on March 4, 2013, framed charges against Sharmila, popularly known as “Iron lady”, for attempting to commit suicide and put her on trial after she refused to plead guilty of the offence. However, Sharmila denied that she attempted suicide while fasting at Jantar Mantar here. (IANS)
