Haflong, July 5: Prompt and judicious action by the Dima Hasao Police and Territorial Army based at Mahur Railway Station saved the lives of three sadhus who were visiting various religious temples of Assam, including Kamakshya Temple, from mob lynching at Mahur in Dima Hasao on Thursday.

The three sadhus from Uttar Pradesh, after visiting Kamakshaya Temple in Guwahati, were going to Tripura to visit the Tripura Sundari Temple through NH-54 E by car. On Wednesday night they reached Mahur and their car developed some problem. So they spent the night in the car. In the morning, people of Block area near Mahur Station found them. As rumour of ‘child lifter’ was doing the rounds on social media, people of Mahur suspected the sadhus to be child lifters and tried to assault them by pelting stones.

The jawans of TA who were on duty rushed and saved the three sadhus from being hurt and the police was informed. The Haflong Police headed by Additional SP (HQ) Pushparaj Sing, Additional SP (security) Prasanta Dutta SDPO, Maibang and Assistant Commissioner Rahul Doley immediately reached Mahur and held discussion with the prominent persons of Mahur and convinced them that they were real sadhus and not child lifters.

Meanwhile, the Additional SP Pusparaj Sing appealed to the people of Dima Hasao not to be misled by unconfirmed news on social media but to contact police if there was any such confusion. He also requested the people not to take law into their hands. Arijit Kemprai, All Dimasa Students’ Union leader, also requested people of every community not to believe in such unfounded rumours but to be vigilant so that no such unfortunate incident happens in the district.
