Tibet's GDP rose 281 times in 50 years

Beijing, September 6: Tibet’s GDP soared from 327 million yuan in 1965 to 92.08 billion yuan ($14.5 billion) in 2014, a 281-fold increase, a white paper published by Chi on Sunday said. Tibet’s economic development has achieved leapfrog development by constantly reaching higher levels, said the paper titled “Successful Practice of Regiol Ethnic Autonomy in Tibet”. Since 1994, GDP grew at an annual rate of 12.4 percent on average, registering double-digit growth for 20 consecutive years, Xinhua news agency reported.

Fiscal revenues increased from 22.39 million yuan in 1965 to 16.475 billion yuan in 2014, further enhancing Tibet’s self-development capabilities, the paper said. Chi overran Tibet after the Communists took charge of Beijing in 1948, forcing the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to flee to India. (IANS)
