Tight security in Manipur University

FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, February 3: There is tight security at the campus of Manipur University on Tuesday following some acts of vandalism yesterday.

Heavily armed policemen and women were deployed to maintain law and order at the campus.

The Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) had submitted a memorandum to the vice chancellor ndakumar Sharma on December 29 demanding construction of link roads, improvement of the hostels and other departments. The university authority was given one month’s time to translate into action these demands. However, it is alleged that precious nothing was done. But university officials said that since it involves administrative and fincial matters it will take some time.

Yesterday, the incensed students locked up the library, stoned various departments, vandalised the boys’ hostel and burned some pieces of furniture. Since the agitation was spreading, the university had to summon police. The situation was brought under control.

However, the MUSU activists said that they will intensify the agitation if their demands are not heeded to. This university has been witnessing various forms of agitations all these years since the students are not happy with the affairs.
