Timber seized at Taradubi

KHERONI, June 12: Officials   Donkamukam Forest Division  of West Karbi Anglonhg today  seized a huge quantity of timber from the Taradubi area in Karbi Anglong (West) forest division. Nobody was arrested by forest officials during the operation. The timbers were seized from a tractor bearing he registration number AS–09 A-6109 from Taradubi under Donkamukam police out-post. Sources said while the forest officials rushed to the spot, the smugglers and tractor’s driver fled from the spot. “We seized a huge quantity of valuable timber worth Rs 35,000  from Taradubi which is situated in the border of the Karbi Anglong and gaon district. The logs were being carried from a nearby Rongkhang forest reserve of Karbi Anglong” a forest official said. The forest officer added that felling of trees has been going on in almost all the reserve forests of the district for the last few years, forest said official Sikari Enghi. “Usually the smugglers use trucks and tractors to transport the logs to Hojai  in neighboring gaon district, where these are handed over to the owners of illegal mills,” the source said.
