Timber smuggler bbed, logs seized in Udalguri

MANGALDAI, May 21: Border outposts of 37 Battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) deployed at Bongurum and Barmakhuli along the Indo- Bhutan border in Udalguri district seized illegally smuggled wood during an operation on Friday night.

SSB personnel succeeded in apprehending one smuggler identified as Suklal Gosai of village Sunderbil underĀ  Harisingha Police Station of Udalguri. The value of the seized wooden logs has been evaluated to be more than Rs 1 lakh. The seized wood and apprehended person have been handed over to the forest department.The people living along the border who are involved in illegal wood cutting, enter into Khalingduar reserve forest in Bhutan and stay there for few days. After cutting the trees they saw them into planks and posts. Thereafter, these planks and posts are smuggled into India and sold in markets in Udalguri district.
