KOKRAJHAR, Dec 25: Based on the specific input on activities of timber smugglers, the personnel of Border out Post (BOP), Datgiri and Gurubasha of 16th Bn. SSB, Ranighuli launched a joint operation at Bhur Tili in Chirang district recently and seized a timber logs, tractor and bike from the smugglers.

Sources from the SSB said the operation was launched about 15 km south of border pillar no. 169/5 and seized one tractor, a pulsar bike and two timber logs worth Rs. 12,20,000 from the smugglers. Sources also said two persons involved in the smuggling of logs were apprehended who are identified as Mijink Basumatary (22) and Tikon Borgoyary (30), both of Thaijoubari village. Both of them were handed over to forest office at Runikhata in Chirang district.

However, to stop the forest crime in the bordering area of Indo-Bhutan is a very tough challenge for the department as well as for other civil administration and forest department because the population of the bordering area does not come forward to stop the ongoing smuggling of forest goods. The forest mafias are also taking advantage of the poor and needy people and are also indulging in helping hand as a fincial assistance for the NDFB (S) rebels.
