tiol Unity Day celebrated with all gaiety in Haflong

Haflong, November 2: tiol Unity Day 2015 was celebrated with enthusiasm and excitement at Haflong town of Dima Hasao district on Saturday. Local NGOs including A Ray of Hope, Art of Living, Green Vision Society, O2 and MaD among others organized a programme at Haflong Lake on the occasion. School children from Don Bosco School and St Agnes Convent School of the town also participated in the event.

 School children lit up candles as a symbol of their commitment towards unity amongst tribes and non tribes of Dima Hasao and tiol unity. The event was open for all. The event included Pipe Band Display by Gorkha Battalion and a cracker show too. The day is the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and is celebrated as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” every year.

 Sardar Patel, also known as the ‘Iron Man of India’, was the first home minister of the country, and is credited with persuading more than 500 princely states to accede to the Indian union post-Independence, thus contributing towards unity of the country. The day was also celebrated in other places like Umrangso, Gunjung, Maibang, Mahur , Hajaichak, Pailapool and Jiribam in association with Assam Rifles. On the occasion, drawing competitions, debate competitions, Pipe Band Display by Assam Rifle personnel and cultural programme was also held.
