tiol Voters' Day observed

SHILLONG, Jan 25: The Election department and the Chief Electoral Officer’s office celebrated the 6th tiol Voters Day today by organizing a ‘Run For Democracy and Inclusion’ at the state capital in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.

The run took place from the U Soso Tham Auditorium complex-Polo- Golflink-  Mawroh-Jaiaw-Riatsamthiah-Gs Road – Kachari Point- Raj Bhavan point and back to the U Soso Tham Auditorium Complex covering  a distance of about 10 Kms and more than 1200 participants of various age group and personnel in Uniform participated in the Run.

A function for prize distribution was held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong after the run in which the Chief Secretary PBO Warjri, was the Chief Guest. The progarmme was also attended by P ik, Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, PS Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District beside others.

In his speech, PBO Warjri talked about the importance of democracy. That almost all countries in the world today have democratic set up, we hardly find countries that are still following the old system of governce, this is because democratic set up always brings development.

The Additiol Chief Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya informed the gathering that Meghalaya is the first state in India to achieve 100% photo electoral roll coverage. He also stated that the voting percentage in Meghalaya in series of elections was excellent.

ik also stressed on the need for mass enrolment in the electoral rolls and the importance of voting in order to ensure healthy democracy.

Similar progarmmes were also organized in other parts of the State like Mawkyrwat, Nongpoh, Resubelpara, Ampati, Jowai, Amlarem, Tura etc.
