From Our Correspondent

Itagar, Feb 28: Corruption was responsible for the collapse of suspension bridge at Tirbin in West Siang district of Aruchal Pradesh on February 15 injuring seven people, alleged the District Congress Committee of West Siang. There was gross violation and work was not executed as per Detail Project Report (DPR). It is alleged that DPR was compromised which resulted in sub-standard work by using bamboos.

West Siang District Congress President Marpin Basar squarely blamed the PWD for poor quality of work leading to the collapse of newly built suspension bridge injuring seven people including a pregnt woman. Basar demanded the government to suspend the officers involved in the dubious works. He also asked the government to constitute an inquiry committee over the low standard work executed by the contractors and the department resulting in its collapse. Did the department DPR recommend use of bamboos in the suspension bridge, Basar asked. One Bajum Boje, a youth of Bege village lodged complaint against the department and contractors with Extra Assistant Commissioner Tirbin on February 18, three days after the incident holding them responsible for the collapse of bridge. “A free and fair investigation should be conducted so that truth is unearthed and responsible people booked under appropriate section of the law” he said demanding that the government pay compensation to injured people for medical expenses. Basar also questioned the role of local MLA in ensuring the quality work of the bridge.
