Tiwa youths must unite to strengthen students' union: CEM

MORIGAON, Aug 13: Taking part in a special convention, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) said that the Tiwa younger generation should unite for strengthening the All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU).  He added that the organization was formed in 1989 and since then the organization had been fighting in order to get autonomous rule in middle Assam. Accordingly, the Tiwas got autonomy in 1995 during the tenure of Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia and in 1998, the border issue of Tiwa land was settled during the tenure of Chief Minister Prafulla Kr. Mahanta.  Later, the organization divided into two groups due to infighting among the leaders of the organization. On Sunday, a convention was held at the Ghakanta Barua College where the dissident groups and Tiwa Women Society decided to fight under one umbrella.  The convention was attended by delegates from gaon, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, and Lakhimpur, as well as Meghalaya.
