Toll-free Childline 1098 service launched by Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli

Hailakandi: Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli inaugurated the Childline 1098 service here on Wednesday. The service aims to save and nurture the children in distress. It will help children suffering from disease or is lost or abandoned or is being exploited or is doing labour.

DC Jalli suggested organizing awareness programme on childline project so that people come to know about it and use the helpline at the time of their need. District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Shekhar Ranjan Deb said the toll-free 24x7 service would help to curb evils of child labour, child marriage and child exploitation.

President, Deshabandhu Club, Dr.Sanjib Dildar and Secretary, Ajit Roy Choudhury, Superintendent, SK Roy Civil Hospital, Labour Officer, District Child Protection Officer and other dignitaries were present on the occasion. The project, the brainchild of Geru Balwari, who conceived the idea in 1996 to help children in distress. Furthering her project, the then MP Maneka Gandhi tabled the bill of Childline project in Parliament and got it passed.

Today the project under the Ministry of Women and Child Development has its presence in a total of 473 cities/districts in 35 states/UTs through its network of over 887 partner organizations across India. In Hailakandi district, the project will be run by its partner organization, Deshabandhu Club of Behera, Cachar.
