Traditiol bamboo swings made at Kolonga as part of Puja festivity

Kheroni, October 14:  During the festive mood of Durga Puja, playing on traditiol bamboo swings was organized at Kolonga in West Karbi Anglong by the Kolonga Nepali Yuba Sangha.

The swings are called ping in Nepali. They present the best of local culture, tradition, community spirit and fun. Normally pings are of two types - Rotey ping and Lingey ping. These swings are made by the community members with traditiol methods using dry grass, bamboo sticks and wood.

The president of Kolonga Nepali Yuba Sangha, Dawa Lama, secretary Dhon Bahadur Lama and members of the Sangha, Pur Bahadur Kharka, Madan Sarmah, Gopal Lama, Arjun Lama, Dil Bahadur Lama, Prem Chetry and Krish Bahadur Chetry along with the local girls and boys of the Kolonga Nepali areas prepared to hold the Lingey ping in their village known as Kolonga Nepali Basti. This will continue till Lakshmi Puja, said Dawa Lama.

Bamboo swings are constructed in many parts of the country as a way of celebration. The swings are normally constructed a week before Ghatasthapa and dismantled only after the festival of Tihar which comes after Dasain. The height of some swings exceeds 20 feet. People of all ages enjoy in the swings. But here in Kolonoga, the Kolonga Nepali Yuba Sangha organized it as competition among the children, girls and youths.
