Traffic Congestion: Kamrup (M) Transport Department Prepares New Guidelines For City Buses

GUWAHATI: In order to ease traffic congestion in Guwahati, the Kamrup (M) transport department prepared new guidelines for the city buses recently. These new rules were supposed to cut the traffic congestion in the city and make the bus rides methodical and more systematic.

Among the new rules, stop times and spots were supposed to be strictly maintained, however, according to DCP Traffic Prasanta Saikia, it is the city bus association who decides the traffic routes. “Most of the city buses throng the GS, MG and RG Baruah road, causing mammoth traffic jams in these routes, while some routes are never taken by the buses”, he said.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Saikia informed, “15 to 20 years back, city buses were time keepers and followed a fixed schedule. This is no longer the case and the entire system is disorderly with buses stopping wherever, mostly due to passengers asking for a lift in random spots. This has turned the city streets into chaos and as such, the entire system needs to be changed.

Traffics patrol vans are regularizing their monitoring to ensure that order is restored in the city. Blatant disregard of rules has led to far too many nuisances in the past. Flouting of rules will not be taken lightly anymore and fines will be imposed if the drivers breach the ascertained guidelines.”
