Train murders: Accused sent to 5-day judicial remand

JOYSAGAR, July 14: The two accused for rape and murder of two women in train toilets, Bikash Das alias Bubu and his associate Bipin Pandey, were produced before the Sivasagar CJM court by SIT officials on Friday.

SIT officers pleaded for 14 days judicial remand of the accused for further investigation but the court allowed only five days remand. Following this, Sivasagar Police brought the accused to the 11th APBN camp situated in Ligiri Pukhuri of Nazira under Sivasagar district on Saturday. Local mob tried to manhandle both the accused inside the court premises and hundreds of representatives of various organizations again demanded capital punishment for these culprits. For security reasons therefore, police decided to send them to the APBN camp and further interrogation will be done there, sources revealed.

Meanwhile, State Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma and State Power Minister Tapan Gogoi visited the house of one of the victims, Radha Kumari, to offer their condolences. Brahma also announced an aid of Rs. 2 lakh for Radha’s mother and minister Tapan Gogoi assured her that a permanent job would be given to one of the family members of Radha Kumari.

Gogoi praised the SIT officers as well as havildar Madhuram Deka for apprehending the culprits. Pramila Rani Brahma told media persons that the Assam Government had directed all the district-level judiciary authorities to form apex courts, at least one in each district. For this necessary steps have already been taken by the government so that trial in such cases could be completed within six months.

The government had also arranged a special review meeting with all the top officials of each security agency serving in Assam on July 12 and strictly directed them to take every necessary step to protect women and children from crimes, Brahma added.
