Training on mental health given to college teachers in Goalpara

Goalpara: The office of the Joint Director of Health Services, Goalpara, on Saturday arranged a one-day training programme on mental health for college teachers under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP). Dr Upamoy Nath, psychiatrist-cum-district programme manager and Dr Hrishikesh Kalita imparted training on signs and symptoms of different mental problems –neurosis and psychosis.

On the other hand, Purnima Pegu, clinical psychologist, discussed the mental health problems common among college students and the role of teachers in this regard. Plabita Saikia, social worker and Khurseeda Ahmed, case manager, acted and spoke on relaxation therapy. Dr Nilmadhav Das, Joint Director of Health Services, distributed the certificates to the participants and requested them to bring awareness in the institutions concerned.

It was identified that approximately 6 per cent of the general population suffers from neuropsychological problem requiring medical care. An analysis has indicated that the incidence will increase to 15 per cent by 2020. This population is scattered all over the State and the healthcare services must reach to the grassroots to cover this population.
