Tributes paid to victims of Charchim ethnic clash

Kheroni, October 19: Victims of the ethnic clash of Charchim in West Karbi Anglong were remembered through mass prayer and candlelight vigil at various places in Karbi Anglong recently.

People of Karbi Anglong lit candles in their homes and public places for the eterl peace of the victims who had died in the ethnic clash. The incident at Charchim under Kheroni police station in West Karbi Anglong occurred on October 17 in 2005 where miscreants waylaid two passenger buses and hacked 23 Karbis, including women and children after segregating them. Range officer Chandrasing Tisso, Kheroni Southern Range, Lachit Terang Range officer, Kamal Engti, Ramsing Phangcho and others attended the organized programme to remember the victims of the massacre at the memorial at Charchim in West Karbi Anglong.

Greater Guwahati Karbi Student Association, HKSA, gaon Karbi Student Association, Lanka Karbi Student Association and KSA of Hamren district committee, students of Kapili College, Baptist Church English School and Kheroni Ove Kimi joined in this mass programme at Charchim. Local people and family members of the victims rued the absence of the elected representative at the programme.

The day of the incident has been observed as black day for Karbi Anglong hills district since 2005.
