Tributes paid to wartime heroes

ITAGAR, Aug 25: Rajiv Gandhi University became the first central varsity in the Northeast in paying homage to war heroes with Param Vir Chakra decorations under the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s Vidya Veerta Abhiyan (Wisdom and Warrior Campaign for Educatiol Institutions) initiative.

RGU was among four central universities chosen for the honour, on an idea perceived in the Parliament towards instilling spirit of patriotism, especially among the youth of the country, a communiqué said here on Friday.

On the sidelines of the event, RGU Vice-Chancellor Tamo Mibang said in the message of solidarity that the university is paying homage to 21 PVCs must reach every nook and corner of the State and the country.

The VC also said Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia University were the other varsities chosen along with RGO for the programme.

He said that the Union HRD Minister had handed him over the portraits of the winners of the top military decoration at tiol Media Centre in Delhi on May 2.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police DIG (RTC), Kimin Mandhir Ekka said martyrs are usually very close to every soldier and are remembered in the military circle “but the step undertaken by RGU will surely stir our peoples mind and will definitely encourage each and every man in uniform.”

Retired Wing Commander Gyati Kago, who is also the president of Ex-servicemen Association of Aruchal Pradesh, thanked RGU for honouring the wartime heroes of the tion.

“Commemorating their sacrifices in this manner in a premier institute is very encouraging and emotiol,” he said.
