Triple talaq: Muslim women hail Prime Minister

Lucknow, Aug 5: Hailing Prime Minister rendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityath for raising voice against the injustice meted out to women through triple talaq, women from Muslim community in Uttar Pradesh are sending ‘rakhis’ to the two BJP leaders. PM Modi has repeatedly urged people belonging to the Muslim community not to “politicise” the issue and requested them to come forward with a “solution”. Terming triple talaq a “bad social practice” PM Modi had earlier said that such practices can be ended by social awakening.  Several Muslim women have challenged the practice of ‘triple talaq’ in which the husband, quite often, pronounces talaq thrice in one go, sometimes over phone or text message.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar heard the issue for six days during which various parties including the Centre, All India Muslim Persol Law Board, All India Muslim Women Persol Law Board and various others made the submissions.
