Tripura celebrates 116th birth anniversary of Kazi zrul Islam

Agartala, June 1 : A musical soiree was recently organized at the Rabindra Centery Hall here on the occasion of the 116th birth anniversary of revolutiory poet Kazi zrul Islam.

 Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Cultural Minister Bhanulal Saha and Higher Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty were among those present during the programme held on May 25. They paid floral tributes to the poet along with hundreds of school students and teachers. zrul geeti or songs of zrul, dance from his famous plays and poetry recitation were the highlight of the event, which stirred the audience and zrul enthusiasts. Kazi zrul Islam enriched all spheres of Bengali culture — literature, music, plays and films.

 Not only Bengali plays and cinema, zrul also contributed to Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi films. zrul Islam, the rebel poet of Bengali literature, was born on May 25, 1899, at Churulia in the erstwhile colonial Bengal Presidency (now in West Bengal).  Through his poems, zrul had inspired people to fight against injustice and repression during the British colonial rule. zrul’s songs and poems were also a major source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
