Tripura gets broad gauge rail service

AGARTALA, Jan 1: Recently, a new broad-gauge (BG) rail was launched at Dharmagar in Tripura.

Improving connectivity in the landlocked northeast region is one of the top most priorities of the government. A lot of focus is being given to enhance railway connectivity in the region.

Tripura is reaping the peace dividends with rapid economic development and improving connectivity.

A 69-year long dream of the people of the landlocked state came true when the first broad gauge engine reached at Dharmagar station. Thousands of people gathered to welcome the first broad gauge train engine with joy and happiness.

On September 20, the state bid adieu to meter gauge rail engine to pave the way for undertaking BG conversion work.

“It is the first time that broad gauge engine has arrived here today at around 2.30 PM and I along with other arrived here at around 10 AM and since then many people of Dharmagar has arrived here to express they joy and feeling. They welcomed the train along with the driver and we hope that very shortly passenger train will start service from Tripura,” said S K Paul, a local

After running the BG railhead, the Northeast Frontier Railway is scheduled to bring ballast train to Agartala passing through all stations by first week of January.

“Our dream has come true and the project has crossed its first step. The first BG engine rolling has completed on date up to Dharma agar from Badarpur and it will continue up to Agartala on this phase. Later on it will go up to Agartala and the rolling will be completed,” said S. DAS, Station Mager of Dharmagar rail station

Better connectivity will give a boost to the overall economic and social development in the Northeastern states.

It will also enhance trade relationships and people to people contact within the country and with neighboring and ASEAN countries. (ANI)
