Tripura : Scientist Discovered Three New Varieties of Pulses

Guwahati: The scientists from Tripura centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have invented three local varieties of pulses- Tripura Moong, Tripura Maskalai and TRCP-9(motordal).

This was revealed during a seminar in pulses at Tripura University by Dr NP Singh, Head of Pulse Research Centre in Kanpur on Tuesday.

Stating that after all formalities and procedure, central government had already issued the notification on the innovation, which will soon be distributed among farmers for commercial cultivation, singh said,“In the last three to four years India made remarkable achievement in the field of pulse production which lowered the pulses price to a great extent”,

Dr Singh while adding that the achievement was possible due to the relentless and rigorous efforts of about 350 scientists working in 51 centres across the country, further said that,“The development becomes visible today in the market. While three years ago pulses’ price had been Rs 200 to Rs 300 per kg now it reduced Rs 50 to Rs 60 because pulses production of the country has increased by 30 percent in last three years due to policy intervention and mission of the government to increase farmers’ income double by 2022.

Speaking on the ocassion, Vice Chancellor of Tripura University Prof V L Dharurkar said that the university would soon set up a pulse research centre to give further to the mission of the state government to make the state self-sufficient in agriculture production and increase farmers’ income.

“Innovation of three verities of pulses in Tripura is considered to be a modest beginning but I am sure if we set up research centre in the university and channelized all agriculture and firm production related innovation down to the farmers and community level, the mission of the government would be successful,” Prof Dharurkar stated.

He further stated that unfortunately most of the innovations of mankind could not reach to the field and as a result, despite having huge development in science and technology the benefit has not yet been grounded adequately in the country. “With the innovation and scientific approach in the four corners of India the pulse production has increased in last 2 years and now the people have been provided with

pulses at very affordable price”.

The Vice Chancellor also pointed that new types of pulses developed in the state should be popularized amongst the farmers and effective methods and mechanism should be put in place for taking the new varieties from lab to land in the fastest way.
