Tripura Village Committee election on February 24

Agartala, January 28 : The State Election Commission announced that the polling for 587 Village Committees will be held on  February 24 and the counting of votes will be undertaken on February 27. G K Rao, State Election Commissioner, a formal notification for the election will beissued on Friday and the last date for filing nomition is February 5.  Village committees are the counterparts of Panchayats in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council Areas and considered as key for the political parties to retain political hold in the hilly areas of the state that comprises two-third of the states geographical areas where one-third of the state’s total population resides. The ruling Left Front led by CPI(M) is retaining hold over more than 80 percent of the village committees for last one and half decades but this time the newly formed Indigenous People’s Front of Twipra is fighting the election with the demand for a separate state is posing a serious threat. I certain areas the BJP also emerged as strong contender while the state’s main opposition the Congress got margilised due to many factors mainly its debacle in the tiol politics. The 586 Village Committees will elect 4597 representatives from 2634 constituencies as many of these are two member constituencies. Rao said all necessary steps has been taken to ensure a peaceful election.
