Truck driver killed in road mishap

MANGALDAI, March 18:  Moon Ali (25), the driver of a Guwahati bound truck with registration AS 01 EC 2166, and a resident of Sipajhar area in Darrang district, was killed when the truck he was driving collided with two trucks in the opposite direction near Genda Chariali, on NH 15 under Dhula PS on Tuesday night. According to the eye witness account, the truck lost control when the driver tried to get rid of a routine check by transport department officials. Four other persons, including drivers of the other two trucks, also sustained injuries and one of the seriously injured persons has been shifted to Guwahati for better treatment. Local people alleged that interception of commercial trucks in the me of checking and fine collection at night by a group of persons suspected to be transport officials and subsequent altercation with some truck drivers has been on the rise nowadays. However, the officials of the district transport department when contacted over phone have ruled out their presence at the time of the accident. Meanwhile, a senior official of the Transport Department in Dispur informed this correspondent over phone that he would ask the District Transport Officer, Darrang for a detailed report regarding the entire episode.
