FROM A CORRESPONDENT

The meeting for this purpose was held in the conference hall of the administrative building at Khumulung, the head quarter of the TTAADC, on Monday last. Representatives of various tribal clans like Jamatia, Kaipeng, Noatia, Malsom and Khatriya Samaj attended the meeting.

Joy Bahadur Jamatia, the executive member of the TTAADC in-charge of the science and technology department presided over the meeting where other TTAADC members like Champarai Aslong, Khagendra Kumar Reang, Bhakta Koloi, Biak Thang Kima and other officials were present. Addressing the meeting Jamatia urged the community leaders to fight against dowry and other superstitions as a social movement. He said it is possible only with involvement of common people.

Participating in the discussion the community leaders opined that the prevailing customary laws in tribal society might become a weapon in the hand of the crusader against the superstitions but some of the cruel provisions of the prevailing customs are standing in the way.

Admitting the problem Joy Bahadur Jamatia said process has already been initiated to amend and codify the customary laws and urged the community leaders to submit the prevailing customs in their society in written form. He urged the leaders to be relived from the superstitions and to take scientific outlook.
