TUR joins chorus against uranium mining

FROM A CORRESPONDENT
SHILLONG, July 13: Thma U Rangli (TUR), a civil society organization of the State, has opposed the two-lane road project connecting Nongstoin and Wahkaji. Terming the road project as ‘unnecessary’, the TUR said, “The government’s own document reveals that the project has been taken up to facilitate uranium mining. People’s development at the cost of uranium mining,” TUR said. According to the organization, the government which is proactive in splitting and blackmailing the people in order to mine uranium should invest the same energy and money in environmentally friendly technology like solar and wind power. The TUR also slammed the political parties of states for its silence on the issue of uranium mining. Meanwhile, the TUR has demanded a fil moratorium on uranium mining in Meghalaya even as it said that it stands in solidarity with the anti-uranium mining movement in the state and West Khasi Hills.
