Tura teacher released, abductor held

Shillong, February 5: A teacher of Tura Christian Girls Higher Secondary School, Iqbal Rafique (45), who was abducted on Sunday, was released today in the outskirt of Tura town in West Garo Hills.

 The abducted teacher was rescued after a police team rrowed down on the suspected abductors. They belong to the disbanded ANVC(B), informed Mukesh Singh, SP of West Garo Hills district, without elaborating the modus operandi of the police. One crimil was arrested.

The teacher was abducted for ransom. It is said that the abductors demanded Rs 5 crore initially but later climbed down to Rs 5 lakh before the police bbed the kingpin identified as Silgrak marak.

 The teacher was abducted from Mankachar, under Hatsingimari sub–division of Assam’s Dhubri district.

 “There were three cadres. However, taking advantage of the dark the other two maged to escape”, Singh added.

“We have recovered Rs. 5 lakh from the family, who had come to pay the ransom. After court formalities, the money will be handed over to victim’s family,” stated Singh.

 Police recovered a 9 mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition from the arrested cadre.

 The arrested former ANVC–B cadre was produced today in court and has been remanded on 10 days’ police custody.
