SHILLONG/TURA, June 20:  The centre will soon open a Passport Seva Kendra in Tura for the benefit of the people of Garo Hills region. Known as the “Post Office Passport Seva Kendra” (POPSK), it will be opened in the second phase of the scheme. The confirmation was received when Union Exterl Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday accepted the request of Tura Lok Sabha MP Conrad K. Sangma. “I am pleased to inform you that as desired by you, we have decided to open a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra in Tura in the second phase of this scheme,” Sawraj said. Presently, the people of Garo Hills do not have a passport office, and those who wish to apply for passports, are forced to travel to Guwahati or Shillong. Recently, Sangma met the Union Minister for Exterl Affairs and requested her to open a passport office in the West Garo Hills town. Sangma had said that the State definitely requires more passport offices since it shares a long boundary with Bangladesh and many times people find it difficult to travel in absence of a passport office. The State’s first Passport Seva Kendra was iugurated in Shillong in 2014.
