Two arrested, sent to police remand

SILCHAR, April 20: Two persons identified as Sadanda Thangzen, a Manipur police constable, and Abdul Hasan Laskar, both in their mid 40, were arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Kamrul Islam Talukdar, a businessman, today. Both the accused after being produced before the CJM Court were sent to police remand for 4 days. The police acting on the clue of mobile phone call by an unidentified person on last Sunday night to the family members of Kamrul in the house of Samsuddin at Arcatipore, informing them that he was in their custody and demanded Rs.20 lakh for his release. The caller cautioned if the payment was not made, Kamrul would be done to death.

The FIR filed by the wife of Kamrul, Yasmin Akhtar, at the patrol post of Rongpur on Monday morning mentioned about the mobile phone call and gave certain vital information. According to the information furnished in the FIR, Yasmin said Kamrul left in the morning of Sunday by Pulsar bike to collect a newspaper and take pan. Since then, he has been missing and all the members of the family were in anxiety and the mobile phone call added to their mental agony.

It is to be recollected that in the morning of Tuesday the dead body of Kamrul was extricated from below the earth near a high school of Rongpur part-I in the eastern fringe of this town across river Barak. The body of Kamrul was buried. The dead body came to light when some dogs were seen moving around the spot and struggling hard to dig out the left hand which was exposed partially. His face likewise was also exposed. Some people in the area could see it and on reaching the spot were confronted with the ghastly sight.

The nearest patrol post of Rongpur was informed. The in-charge alerted the higher police officials and reached the spot. In the presence of magistrate D Suchiang, the dead body was recovered and sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. According to Utpal Chanda, patrol post in-charge, on the basis of mobile call, Sadanda Thangzen was arrested from Jiribam and Afzal Hussain Laskar from Banskandi. It was from Sadanda Thangzen that the mobile and the Pulsar bike of Kamrul were recovered.

The cross-examition of both the accused is being carried on and is expected to reveal the motive behind the gruesome murder. According to a source, Kamrul was believed to be involved in illegal business and also drug trafficking. It is suspected that differences in sharing the money earned from the shady business might be the cause which prompted the duo to elimite Kamrul. Police is investigating all possible angles and is hopeful of a definite conclusion.
