Two Assam Rifles jawans injured in Ukhrul ambush

IMPHAL June 2: The dreaded insurgents of the People’s Liberation Army, the military wing of the Revolutiory People’s Front struck again on Monday in Ukhrul district. They planted a powerful remote controlled bomb at the roadside in the mountain district. On Monday afternoon the personnel of Assam Rifles had taken out a foot patrolling in the mountain areas. The bomb was detoted injuring seriously two personnel. The shrapnel injuries were so severe that both of them had to be airlifted for evacuation to the military hospital at Leimakhong. It is feared that both of them suffered life threatening injuries.

The uninjured personnel opened fire and there was a fierce exchange of fire between the two groups lasting over 40 minutes. Later the insurgents vanished in the mountains when reinforcements arrived there. The insurgents who are past masters in the mountain warfare have been ambusing the security personnel in some mountain districts.

When there are coordited operations these insurgents simply cross the intertiol border to get lost in the no man’s land. Combing operations are being launched following Monday’s attack. However there is no report of arresting anyone.
