Two-day fair held at Maibang to promote self-help groups

Haflong, October 3: A two-day fair which started on Saturday at Maibang, Diyung Valley block campus, ended with a grand function on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Sunday.

This exhibition-cum-sale showcased colourful tribal dresses, handicraft, organic fruits and vegetables and ethnic food which were locally made and grown by more than 400 self-help groups promoted by Diyung valley block, Maibang under DDU- NRLM.

Altogether 40 stalls by the village-level federation were set up. Villages from areas near Maibang and also from distant villages such as Gunjung, Thalambra, Diger, Khepre, Hajadisa, and Shemkhor took part.

The two-day fair saw an overall sale of more than Rs 50,000 till the afternoon of the second day.  Such an event held for the first time in this block in order to encourage the village level federation and self-help groups.

The iuguration of the programme was done by NCHAC chairperson Ranu Langthasa, who was accompanied by Executive Member i/c Agriculture, Subrata Thaosen, MAC Ajay Chakraborty, and ADO Laltingie mpui.

The second day of the programme was organized to commemorate the 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the tion. The chief guest of the programme was Subrata Thaosen, NCHAC EM for Agriculture, guest of honour was Purabi Phonglo, District Information and Public Relations officer, accompanied by Town Committee chairman P Thaosen and mager of Langpi Dihangi Rural Bank, mouzadar and other eminent persons from Maibang.

At the end of the programme, prizes were distributed to the winners of three best stalls with highest number of sale.

In his short speech, Block Development Officer Projit iding applauded the self-help groups for their outstanding effort in making the event a grand success. He also encouraged the groups to participate in the upcoming intertiol trade fair in New Delhi.

A grand musical night featuring local artistes and bands was held on both the days of the event.
