Two GNLA cadres gunned down

Shillong, June 9: Two Garo tiol Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres were gunned down in an encounter with the police at Ajitjak area under Shallang police station of West Khasi Hills district on Friday morning. Superintendent of Police West Khasi Hills G. D Kharwanlang told The Sentinel that based on specific inputs, the SWAT and SF-10 team of the police descended at the hideout during the wee hours.

“On being cordoned, the militants were asked to surrender but instead of reciprocating the gesture the armed men fired upon the police team and this led to an encounter,”stated Kharwanlang, adding, during the exchange of fire two GNLA cadres were gunned down while others maged to escape.”

The S.P also said that base on the trail there could be around three to four militants who are suspected to have been injured. One Chinese made rifle and a shotgun was recovered from the site of the encounter, further informed the Police official. The slain GNLA cadres have not been identified till filing of this report. The site of the encounter is well known as a secure place for the militants who run an extortion racket in the coal rich belt under Shallang police station.
