Two incidents of shootout trigger panic in Jorhat

JORHAT, May 11: In two different incidents of shootout, one person was shot at from point blank range and was found dead near the Dholi bridge in the Panichokuwa area and in the other incident, a private security guard of an automobile dealer was seriously injured after armed gunmen shot the guard from close range in the Charingia area of Jorhat. Incidentally, both the incidents that created sensation on Wednesday, happened in the area under the Pulibor Police Station.

While Prakash Gogoi, security guard of the Chakrapani Ford Automobile dealer, sustained bullet injuries in the left leg and was later admitted to JMCH, in the other case, dreaded and veteran car lifter Sanjib Saikia was found shot dead near the Dholi bridge at Panichokuwa area of the tiol Highway 37. The body bore bullet injuries in the scalp leading to excessive dripping of blood and later death. Police are investigating both the cases. Only a month back, the driver of a Mahindra pick-up vehicle was shot at in the same area after the driver stopped the vehicle to take a short p.

These sporadic incidents have once again proved to the easy accessibility of illegal weapons in the area and the presence of a huge arsel possessed by crimils and gangsters cannot be totally ruled out. The Jorhat district administration had taken measures before the assembly elections to deposit legal and confiscated illegal weapons and even booked a few crimils. But these measures have failed to check the continuous flow of cheap weapons in this part of the town under Pulibor Police Station where most youngsters have affiliation to one gang or the other.

Similarly, dreaded crimil Babul Lahon has equally maged to give police the slip so far after committing one incident of shooting after the other.
