Two KSU members arrested, 3 FIRs filed

Shillong, May 28: Meghalaya police has filed three FIRs and arrested two members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in the aftermath of the violent attack at the site of the proposed railway project at Rongho village near Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday.

The two KSU members are president of the North Khasi Hills unit Ferdyld Kharkamni and central body assistant general secretary, Sonstar Nongkhlaw.

The Ri-Bhoi district administration has also assured of legal action against those involved in arson at the railway construction site and the subsequent attack on police personnel at Nongpoh.

Ri-Bhoi, Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare said that those involved in Saturday’s incidents will be brought to book.

“Maintence of peace and tranquility is in our best interest,” Gotmare said.

Police sources informed that about 10 police personnel were injured in the incidents on Saturday both at the Railway project site and Nongpoh police station.

The Police department is also yet to get any assessment of damages from the Railway authority as the assessment is being prepare by the railway department and implementing agency of the project.

Meanwhile, since the incident on Saturday there has been a spate of arson attacks in the capital city Shillong.

On Saturday night petrol bombs were hurled at Laban and Rynjah localities in the city.

At around 9 pm last night, miscreants tried to lob a petrol bomb at a social welfare office at Laban, opposite the Bharat Scouts and Guides another petrol bomb was hurled at Rynjah police station on the same night police said.

Earlier on Saturday at around 4:50 pm, miscreants set on fire a Goverment official vehicle bearing the registration number ML 01 5971 at Mahari Petrol Pump in Jaiaw Langsning on Saturday evening. The vehicle belongs to the Agriculture department.

The vehicle was allotted to the District Sericulture Officer of Ri-Bhoi, R B Lyngwa and was requisitioned for visit of the Standing Committee of the Public Service Commission.
