Two rape accused sentenced to 7-year jail

Bongaigaon, Feb 4: Two persons convicted for rape were sentenced to seven years imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine by the Chirang district sessions court of Judge Hema Devi on Saturday. The convicted persons are bin Chandra Das, son of Rati Kanta Das, and Hop Soren, son of Mongol Soren, both residents of Nomalhur village under Sidli PS in Chirang district. The incident took place on April 24, 2014, the day of parliamentary election in Chirang district. The victim, a resident of Lungchung area of Chirang district, was kidpped from the Kachikotra area of Chirang district when she was returning home after casting her vote. The victim was waiting for the bus in Kachikotra when bin Das, the accused who was driving a tempo, stopped near her and assured to drop her in Sundari area which is near her residence. The victim got into the tempo assuming that the tempo belonged to some political party which was offering free rides to people so that they could go and cast their votes.

But instead of taking her home, bin took her to the house of Hop Soren in Sidli and both raped her. After that, they dumped the victim in an isolated place. The next morning, local people rescued the victim and handed her over to the police. The police registered a case and arrested both culprits. The case continued in the sessions court of Chirang district and on Saturday, both the culprits were sentenced to seven years
