Two securitymen injured in Tamenglong ambush

FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

IMPHL March 22: From recent violent incidents it has become clear that Tamenglong district of Manipur has become the battle ground of some armed groups and some of them are attacking the security personnel here and there. The latest ambush took place yesterday at Lunglong village in Tamenglong district. Two personnel of Gorkha Rifles were wounded in the attack during which automatic rifles were freely used.

However the attackers escaped through the mountains before the arrival of the additiol forces.

One underground organisation is also making its presence felt in the district. Since it is not a sigtory to the ceasefire and the suspension of operations it is free to attack the state and the central forces. Besides members of this outfit have been exchanging fire with other outfits.

There have been charges and countercharges among some outfits on the recrudescence of violence. However the villagers who have been at the receiving end are not interested in free trading of charges and countercharges among some armed groups. In most cases innocent villagers are caught in the cross fire. Besides the village elders are subjected to harassments and tortures since the security forces are of the view that the armed persons not have camped in the villages for carrying out ambuscades and other insurgency related activities without the cooperation of the villagers. Whenever there is a violent incident the villagers flee only to return when the dust settles down.

For unexplained reasons the government is not rushing state and central forces to contain violence in this hill district. It has become risky to pass through the district through the NH 37. In view of the kid glove treatment meted out by the government more violence is in the offing.
