U Soso Tham's death anniversary observed

SHILLONG, Dec 18: Former Home Minister and current Vice Chancellor Martin Luther Christian University R.G Lyngdoh during the 75th death anniversary of Poet laureate U Soso Tham said that Babu Soso Tham is the one person who can fill in that gap and become the role model for the youths of today’s generation. The programme was organized by the State government at U Soso Tham auditorium toady in which, R.G Lyngdoh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. While speaking as the Chief Guest on the death anniversary of U Soso Tham, Lyngdoh said, “Babu Soso Tham was born in 1873 during the time when Christianity was just coming into these hills and a lot of our culture and beliefs are being belittled and I’m sure he must have been very concern about what will happen to the Khasi culture and to be able to write with so much passion only shows what he was feeling deep inside.” He pointed out that when people look at his writings the poet talks about not only about ture but he talks about the Khasi legends, his concern about the way people treat each other, on how people are preserving ture and his writhing is still relevant till today. He said the request of the relatives of Babu Soso Tham to the state government to declare the location of the poet’s erstwhile home at Saitsohpen into a heritage site should be realized.  “We don’t have many such lumiries among our people and I feel it is correct that the government should declare the site as a heritage site,” he said.
