Udalguri Police launches crackdown on extortion; one NDFB (S) cadre injured

TANGLA, October 27: Udalguri Police launched a crackdown in the district against rampant extortion by NDFB (S) cadres based on numerous complaints by businessmen, VCDC chairmen and contractors.

Extortion notes are being served to reputed persons and people are living in the grip of fear and insecurity. When contacted, police sources said that they had launched a crackdown on extortionist groups in the district and as a follow-up of their operation, a police team apprehended one at Hahini gaon under Tangla PS on Thursday, few kilometers away from Tangla town.

 Police said two extortionists came on a bike to collect the amount demanded from Bhutiachang VCDC chairman of Udalguri. While one fled from the scene, the other fired at the police, following which the police fired one shot which hit the waist of the cadre while trying to run away.  The injured was later taken to Tangla CHC and referred to GMCH for treatment, police said.

Reportedly, the accused NDFB (S) cadre has been identified as one Subun Basumatari  (22) alias Geraila, son of Ajay Basumatari, a resident of Phaisia village under Harisinga PS of Udalguri. A 7.65mm pistol, three rounds of live ammunition and a mobile handset were recovered from his possession.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Panery PS vide 67/16 under various sections of IPC.
