UDP candidate challenges HSPDP for open debate

SHILLONG, July 18: Former KHADC CEM and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for the MDC by-election from Nongkrem constituency, HS Shylla on Monday challenged the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) for an open debate on five issues at Madan Smit.

Shylla challenged Nongkrem HSPDP for open debate following the party accused him of misleading the people on the issue on uranium mining. Some of the issues put forward by Shylla for debate includes the need to preserve the powers of headmen and dorbar in accordance with the age old customs, to stand strong behind Article 244 (2) in order to further empower the Autonomous District Council and not to turn towards Article 371 A and G like the ga and Mizo, to do way with the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act. 2015 etc.

Addressing a press conference here today, Shylla said, “The Nongkrem HSPDP had accused me of misleading the general public.  So I want to challenge them for an open debate.”

“I have also suggested the headmen of Nongkrem constituency to be present as a neutral observer in the open debate,” he said.
