UDP leaders apprise governor to petition against Syiem

From A Reporter

SHILLONG, March 2: A delegation of senior leaders of the United Democratic Party (UDP), on Thursday apprised the Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit to petition against the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pynshngain N Syiem after allegations that UDP is cozying up to the Congress. It may be mentioned that on Wednesday, KHADC, CEM had alleged that the Congress was using senior working president of the party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong (to destabilize the coalition in the council).

The UDP delegation during their meeting also informed the governor about the various anomalies in the KHADC. Speaking to reporters after the meeting at Raj Bhavan, Bindo M Lanong said, “He (Syiem) is desperate…charging us of being with the Congress. Therefore we came to the Governor since he is neutral.” Lanong also clarified that the House Committee constituted during the Budget Session of the KHADC which will examine the magisterial inquiry report on the council’s fund transfer to a persol account should not be linked with the party’s support to the People’s Democratic Forum (PDF) the ruling coalition in the district council. “We did not say anything against it (House Committee).Let it conduct its business,” Lanong said.

He stated that the UDP does not want the matter to drag on. On the issue of withdrawing of support to the PDF in the KHADC, Lanong said that the party will wait for the report of the House Committee. It may be noted that on Wednesday, KHADC chief, Syiem had said that the decision to submit the magisterial inquiry report on the fund transfer for examition by the House Committee was taken by the House where UDP MDCs were also a part and Opposition Leader Manstudy Nongrem from the Congress was the chairman of the committee.

The KHADC CEM further said that it appears that UDP, which is part of the executive committee, has no faith in the council. Syiem had also asked the UDP to direct its MDCs to withdraw support before meeting the governor; else it will expose the immaturity of the party.

Earlier, the UDP members petitioned Meghalaya Governor against Syiem for failing to reply to the party’s nine-point query. During the meeting Purohit asked the delegation to bring more documentary evidences to proof the charges against Syiem. The UDP is visibly irked by the fact that the KHADC Chief failed to reply to the nine point query of the party.
