UDP president dares Congress dissident legislators to resign

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, May 30: United Democratic Party (UDP) president and Opposition leader Dr Donkupar Roy today dared the Congress dissidents in the Dr Mukul Sangma led cabinet to resign from their posts before demanding change of leadership.

“Those calling for the removal of the Chief Minister should first step down as a matter of principle. It is surprising they demand the removal of the Chief Minister but are themselves sticking to their posts,” Dr Roy told mediapersons at his official residence today.

The Opposition leader also said that the move of the dissident Congress legislators shows that they are nervous after the BJP’s win in neighboring Assam and the defeat of the party in Tura Lok Sabha by-poll.

“The days of the Congress in the State are numbered.. at the most they can last till 2018,” Dr Roy said.

He also said that as a party they are not interested in toppling Dr Sangma but if the Congress breaks on its own, “it is their problem”.

Dr Roy also said that his party will go for a pre-poll alliance with likeminded parties before the 2018 Assembly elections and pointed out that this time it will be a “perfect alliance”.

He also said that the dissidence in the Congress camp is hampering developmental works in the State and the ultimate sufferers will be the people.
