UDP refutes claim of being instigated by Congress

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Feb 19: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has rubbished claims that the Congress was instigating it to turn against Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pynshngain N Syiem. “There is no truth in such allegations.

It is ridiculous to think that the Congress is instigating the UDP. The party wants to present Executive Committee led by Syiem to last,” UDP sources said. The source however pointed out that if an opportunity present then the UDP would lead the Executive Committee in the KHADC. According to sources a political party exist because it wants to provide a sense of direction be it in the state or in the district councils. “We all (political parties) aspire for that,” the sources said.

“If circumstances present us with an opportunity we will gladly accept it. We do not need any reason to topple the present Executive Committee under PN Syiem,” the source said.

The sources also pointed out that since 2014 when the first Executive Committee of the present term of the KHADC led by the then MDC, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit under the All Regiol Parties Alliance (ARPA), then the Executive Committee led by Adelbert Nongrum and subsequently the present one led by PN Syiem, the UDP with an open heart supported them without aspiring to lead them. It may be mentioned that recently, the UDP had nine-point to the CEM of the KHADC related to various scams in the district council.

However, the CEM instead of giving specific replies to those queries sent a letter to the UDP, MDCs saying that they should inform the party leaders about what transpired in the meeting held on February 16 irking the party.
