Ugratara Theft: Masterminds yet to come under police dragnet, five detained

GUWAHATI: Although five suspected persons have been detained for interrogation in connection with the sensational Ugratara Dewalay looting case, the masterminds of the condemnable incident are yet to come under police dragnet. Consequently, the clueless state of the police on the incident has raged the followers of the temple as well as the like-minded people of the State. The incognizant of the police has also raised doubts on their competency for there was clear evidence recorded in the CCTV camera.

To summarize the progress achieved till Sunday by the police, only five persons have been detained for interrogation on suspicious grounds.

Notably, as directed by the Police Commissioner, Guwahati, a team of investigation has been formed comprising the Crime Branch, Special Branch, Criminal Investigation Department, City Police with the help of Citizens’ Committee.

It must be mentioned here that this has been the second incident of looting occurred at the Ugratara Dewalay. Meanwhile, police suspects that the present incident has been suspected to be committed by some drug addicted persons. Following the incident, the police has registered a case (No 271/18 u/s 457/380 IPC).

Notably, in a sensational incident the main Astadhatu idol of Goddess Ugratara that was inside the ‘Saktipeeth’ Ugratara Temple was stolen in the early hours on Friday from the heart of the Guwahati city, in the Uzan Bazar area. The thieves also vandalized the temple and took away the main idol besides valuables and offerings.

CCTV footage had revealed four thieves involved in the incident were seen to be happily running away with all the looted valuables. As the news spread, devotees and locals in the area immediately gathered at the temple in utter shock and disbelief.
