Unhygienic Slaughter Houses Selling Meat At Higher Prices

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is still to rid the people of greater Guwahati of unhygienic and illegal slaughterhouses that have outnumbered some 156 legal ones in the city.

There are only 156 license-holding slaughter houses in greater Guwahati where there are hundreds of illegal and unhygienic slaughter houses doing business under the very nose of the civic body. Skilled goats are seen kept uncovered in such unhygienic slaughter houses that have sprung up along the main roads at places like Lankeswar, Jalukbari, Maligaon, Kamakhya Gate, Dhirenpara, Datalpara, Kotahbari, Lalganesh and various other places in greater Guwahati.

Apart from selling unhygienic mutton (meat), hundreds of such illegal slaughter houses charge up to Rs 600 per kg of mutton, thereby violating the rate of Rs 560 per kg as set by the Greater Guwahati Quresi Meat Association. The association has been selling meat at this rate since Bohag Bihu this year.

Such unhygienic sale is also seen in case of fish and chicken in greater Guwahati.

For the past two days, people from the GMC were seen to carry out a drive against unhygienic sale of meat and fish in areas like Ganeshguri, Supermarket, Six Mile etc. Will not the civic body carry out such drives in other areas in greater Guwahati where illegal slaughter houses without holding any license are doing a roaring business, risking public health?

When contacted, Greater Guwahati Quresi Meat Association president Muslim Ali said: “Since we can’t take the law on our own hands, we appeal to the GMC to act tough on slaughter houses violating laws.”
