Unmanned five-way traffic point in Guwahati City

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: A five-way section of the Reserve Bank Traffic point, between the Railway Station, Paltan Bazaar, Pan Bazaar, Cotton University and Dighali Pukhuri, is experiencing chaotic traffic due to lack of police personnel to regulate the movement of vehicles.

There are many schools and colleges nearby, the nearest school has around 2400 students and with city buses zooming past and screeching halting at the stop, motorists and hasty drivers taking a ‘U’ turn at the school traffic point, especially during rush hour, poses high risks of accidents, not to mention traffic congestion. Pedestrians are the worst-affected.

Motorists are often observed coming in the opposite direction trying to jump the traffic spot. Speaking to The Sentinel, DCP Traffic Prasanta Saikia said “We have received a lot of complaints and are doing our best to control the situation. The problem is due to shortage of man power, however, steps will be taken to deploy traffic policeman at the point permanently. For now, we will deploy a home guard at the earliest.”
