SHILLONG, Apr 12: The Citizens Forum of Mawsynram constituency under the leadership of social activist Banshai Marbaniang on Thursday requested the State Government to upgrade the Mawsynram Community & Rural Development Block into a Civil Sub-Division.

In this connection, the Forum had also submitted a memorandum at the Chief Minister’s office requesting for the same.

Addressing reporters in the city, Marbaniang said, “This will ease the problems of the people comprising of 166 villages in interacting with various branches of the government without them having to spend time and money for petty official work.”

He said with a new dispensation at the helm of affairs in the State, the people’s expectations are high and that there will be proper road connectivity, improved transportation, easier access to government schemes and government support, access to equitable water and power supply among other benefits.

“Development should reach the far flung areas of the state and not relegated to just Shillong town only. If development reaches the interior areas, people will not migrate to Shillong for work, study or health care,” he said.

Stating that most government offices in the Mawsynram Community & Rural Development Block are manned only once a week, he said, “The office goers are hardly in attendance on any given day apart from market days which causes a problem for the people of the area when they have to deal with the government regarding any official work,” he said.

He said that government jobs are saturated and the government cannot hope of employing all the youths in the state. However, the government can create avenues for employment which will give a boost to their earning capacity.

Marbaniang pointed out that when tourists visit Mawsynram Block, they are greeted with picturesque places. However, it becomes very depressing while travelling through Mawphlang Balat Road as there are many potholes, ditches, eroded stones and half constructed roads.

“This has created problems for the people especially when shifting patients form Mawsynram CHC to Shillong. He further said that it is the desire of the people to convert the existing Mawphlang Balat Road into a tiol Highway double lane and improvement of Mawsynram-Ryngku boarder roads which are very treacherous and risky.
