Vehicle-theft gang kingpin arrested at Golaghat

JORHAT , April 17:  The lifting of a Mahindra Bolero vehicle bearing registration number AS 23 -F- 6244 from the parking area of reputed hotel in Jorhat on Wednesday night indirectly helped the Jorhat Police to achieve a tremendous success in its ongoing operations against a gang of bike lifters and car thieves in the district.

A joint team of police led by  Deputy Superintendent of Police (Probatiory) Pallav Tamuly, OC Pradip Borah and Pulibor IC Hrishikesh Hazarika arrested the main kingpin of the gang who has been  identified as Jayanta Bora alias Jogen (37) from Halikihaat Doborahi of Komarbondha Outpost under Golaghat Police Station in the wee hours of Friday.

Talking to this correspondent, OC Pradip Borah said, “The Mahindra Bolero SUV was picked up by a gang of two persons mely Adarsh Sarma alias Gautam Sarma of Rowriah and Rizu Ali of Garmur of Jorhat and just after the theft they took the vehicle to place near Titabor and broke the GPS vigation system fitted on to the vehicle resulting in the engine shutdown. This led to an altercation between the two about breaking the GPS and Rizu Ali fired one round in the air and fled the scene. Immediately public gathered and captured Adarsh Sarma and thrashed him black and blue and handed him to the Titabor Police from where we picked him up and on the basis on his inputs we bbed the main kingpin Jayanta Bora son of Rukheshwar Bora.”

The OC further added, “The modus operandi of the gang was that a first party would lift a vehicle from Jorhat and hand it over to the second party as Jayanta who would then sale the vehicle to the third party at Dimapur. The origil lifter has a rate fixed for Rs 1 lakh for the theft. The second party Jayanta would then sell it in Dimapur for Rs 3 lakhs. Already Adarsh Sarma has confessed about stealing many SUV’s from the Fancy Ali area of Jorhat. A Jorhat PS Case no 785/2015 U/S 379 IPC has been registered and the duo will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and will pray for their remand”.

In the meantime Rizu Ali who fled the scene after firing one round in the air was apprehended by a night patrolling party of Dergaon police under Golaghat Police station and recovered a 9MM pistol and 9 rounds of live cartridges. Rizu was captured while trying to enter Jorhat via the NH 37 from the Moubondha area of Jorhat after a hot chase and took him back to Dergaon. The Jorhat Police is likely to bring crimil Rizu Ali on remand for further interrogation and find details about other vehicle theft cases.
