Vigilance SP’s transfer raises eyebrows

GUWAHATI, Feb 16: The sudden transfer of Mukul Saikia, SP (Law), Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, as SP (Border I) has triggered suspicion among certain quarters in Assam. Saikia, who earlier investigated several high profile corruption cases, was recently probing the suspected massive scam in Social Welfare department.  Sources said Saikia has been transferred as his investigation into the Social Welfare scam has reached almost fil stage and the first phase charge-sheet is being prepared against 7 of the accused persons, which will be filed in the current month.  It may be mentioned that three former ministers who headed Social Welfare department in the erstwhile Congress government, besides high officials of the department have been quizzed by Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau in the suspected scam.  When asked about the reason behind his sudden transfer, Saikia told reporters: “Police officials can be transferred by the government when it wants to. The investigation into the scam might have ruffled someone’s feathers. But we have done our investigation legally.”
