Violation of traffic rules rampant in State

SHILLONG, May 10: Despite countless efforts by the traffic police and other social groups in the city to make people aware of various traffic rules and regulations through awareness programmes, the trend of traffic violations has not reduced as this year (from January to April) alone, the number of violation cases detected in different offenses is 6, 948.  As per the data received from the Shillong Traffic police, in January alone this year, there were 1,830 cases detected with the highest detection in February with 1,976, March -1,564 and April with 1,578 cases.

The police department from the 6, 948 traffic violators has realized an amount of Rs. 24, 88,330.

According to police data, the highest traffic violation is wrong parking with 1,820 cases detected, followed by drivers not wearing seatbelts with 1,473. The number of No Entry cases across the city detected by the police is 568, obstruction-511, drunk driving cases detected is 289. Even as the tainted glass is banned however the police have detected around 188 cases. The police have also detected 341 cases where the driver does not have driving license and 164 cases of drivers having no documents. As per the police data, there have been 197 cases where people are riding their bikes without helmets and 74 cases where drivers are using mobile phones while driving. The number of accidents cases from January-April 2017 as detected by police is 123 and rash and negligent/ dangerous driving with 45 cases. There were also 141 cases of overloading detected by the traffic police.
