Volunteers to play major role in South Asian Games: Sonowal

GUWAHATI, Jan 6: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports Sarbanda Sonowal said that volunteers should work as a team to make the 12th South Asian Games a grand success.

Addressing the Volunteers’ Training Programme at the Royal Group of Institutions in Guwahati today, Sonowal said that volunteers have to play a major role during the Games. “Volunteers should act as a bridge between the people of the region and the participants to make the Games a grand success,” the sports minister said.

He also instructed the organisers to give intensive training to the volunteers so that they can handle any situation with confidence during the Games.

The15-day Volunteers Training Programme was kicked off at the Royal Group of Institutions today. Around 1,000 volunteers turned out on first day to take part in the training programme. Nearly 2,500 volunteers will work round-the-clock to provide necessary help to the athletes, officials and spectators during the SAF Games which will be jointly hosted by Guwahati and Shillong from February 5. There will be altogether 23 events in the Games and 17 of them will be held in Guwahati.
